Inside The Network
🔺What we’re watching: Lombard Finance has partnered with BTC.b, the bridged bitcoin asset on Avalanche, from Ava Labs.
🔺Why it matters: Lombard will integrate BTC.b to its decentralized, multi-layered architecture, which powers its LBTC liquid staking token. The company plans to expand BTC.b’s footprint across chains like Ethereum, Katana, MegaETH and Solana while preserving native support for Avalanche users and protocols.
Similar to other wrapped bitcoin solutions, BTC.b is backed 1:1 by bitcoin, and lets holders use it for DeFi applications like lending on Aave or trading on GMX.
Now operating on Lombard’s protocol, BTC.b can be directly minted via its app, skipping KYC gates, as well as permissionless access to bitcoin, enabling the company to embed the asset into yields and vaults directly.
“BTC.b has been the leading Bitcoin asset on Avalanche since its launch, and this transition aims to secure its long-term future while unlocking new growth opportunities,” John Nahas, Chief Business Officer at Ava Labs said in a statement. “Lombard expands BTC.b infrastructure, cross-chain reach, and institutional relationships needed to scale bitcoin’s role in DeFi.”
This partnership can make way for BTC.b’s long-term success on Avalanche, while positioning it for broader connectivity across the wider blockchain ecosystem. This in turn can allow for more dedicated resources, infrastructure, and institutional relationships to be used to enhance BTC.b’s utility and liquidity. All while maintaining Avalanche as a key hub for BTC.b activity and innovation.
🔺The bigger picture: Since Lomboard will house both BTC.b and LBTC, it becomes a platform that offers both yield and non-yield bitcoin assets in a permissionless and interoperable way.
In addition, the collaboration allows both teams to focus on their main mission statements: Ava Labs advancing Avalanche as a performant and composable environment for DeFi, while Lombard is integrating bitcoin through trusted infrastructure and institutional access.
While there are other bitcoin bridges and wrapped solutions out there like tBTC, WBTC and cbBTC, BTC.b now has the potential to stand apart because it enables its permissionless minting, no rehypothecation, and Avalanche-native speed.
