Inside the network
🔺What we’re watching: Avalanche is gaining traction in Japan through strategic collaborations with industry leaders as it seeks to position itself as the nexus of tokenization, mobility and financial services.
🔺Why it matters: Japan is no stranger to blending its cultural heritage with modern technology, which indirectly makes it a promising environment for blockchain adoption. This is evident from data that shows Japan’s blockchain market is projected to grow to $75 billion by 2030.
Japan’s cultural emphasis on precision and modernization aligns with the blockchain ethos of building a transparent and reliable system for fostering digital economies. This can be seen in the country’s push for digitalization, as nearly 43% of payments in 2024 were made online. This very tendency makes the country attractive for blockchains like Avalanche as they try to push both their boundaries and that number even higher.
The tokenization of assets and onchain financial rails stand to broaden how tech is adopted in Japan. Avalanche’s direct involvement can reduce barriers for enterprises and developers by creating systems that can communicate with one another without the need for intermediaries. In turn, this will set a global precedent for the blockchain’s integration into traditional industries.
These are not just assumptions: Avalanche has capitalized on Japan’s market through partnerships across tokenization, mobility and financial services with brands like Suntory's Bowmore for NFT-linked whisky; Toyota Blockchain Lab for onchain mobility prototypes; Simplex for stablecoin proofs-of-concept; Densan and SMBC Group for payment infrastructure; and JPYC for a licensed yen-backed stablecoin.
🔺The bigger picture: Looking ahead, these developments and partnerships stand to bolster Avalanche’s contributions in the Asia-Pacific region, allowing countries to improve their global financial capabilities and setting a precedent for tokenized economies.
These partnerships can accelerate real-world asset integration and contribute to a projected $251 billion Japanese blockchain market by 2033.
Ultimately, Avalanche's involvement in Japan’s growing technological ecosystem underscores blockchain's potential to integrate with traditional industries, and drive economic efficiency and innovation on the global scale.
