Inside the network
🔺What we’re watching: Avalanche has rolled out the testnet for its network upgrade, Avalanche9000, to reduce the cost of deploying layer-1 (L1) blockchains. Alongside this, Retro9000 launched to incentivize developers to build onchain applications or adopt L1 solutions.
🔺Why it matters: Avalanche9000 is the chain’s next step to lower the barriers for developers who wish to launch their own L1 blockchain. Historically, deploying an L1 on Avalanche could cost up to $70,000. With Avalanche9000, this cost has decreased significantly to about $1,000, making it far more accessible to developers.
The upgrade will also incorporate interoperability to enable communication between L1s built on the Avalanche network. For instance, a decentralized exchange like Dexalot would be able to interact directly with a web3 game like Off The Grid. This would eliminate the need for bridging solutions or asset exchanges, which could be complex or tedious for users.
Retro9000 was launched as a grant program to incentivize developers building an onchain application. This $40 million initiative encourages users to build their own L1 or educate them how it can benefit their project. Retro9000 showcases Avalanche’s commitment to provide developers the resources they may need in order to deploy an L1 blockchain.
🔺The bigger picture: Avalanche9000 and Retro9000 are part of Avalanche’s broader mission to make blockchain technology more accessible and to educate others about how beneficial it can be. Additionally, traditional web2 games like MapleStory have started to build using Avalanche technology and the deployment of their own L1.
If successful, Avalanche9000 could accelerate blockchain adoption across diverse sectors, bridging web2 and web3 ecosystems and establishing Avalanche as a leader in scalable and interoperable blockchain solutions.
