BitcoinOS releases 2025 plan to enhance Bitcoin’s utility
BitcoinOS Monthly Overview - January 7, 2025
Welcome to the first BitcoinOS Monthly Overview.
Before we get into it, here’s an explainer:
BitcoinOS aims to upgrade Bitcoin’s network through the use of ZK proofs, which allow it to embed any computation directly into Bitcoin transactions. This permits for a shared infrastructure layer of Bitcoin L2s that features L1 security, cryptographic bridging and scalability, as well as natively private transactions, and fully programmable tokens on Bitcoin.
BOS’ modular infrastructure acts as an operating system that creates interoperability among blockchains within the system. As such, BOS aims to maintain Bitcoin’s network effects and establish a permissionless paradigm for the original Bitcoin chain to evolve in layers without forking its code.
Every month, we’re diving into BitcoinOS and ecosystem developments to get up to speed on its latest updates, metrics, insights and more – all in one place.
The ₿OS Breakdown
⚡What happened: BitcoinOS (BOS) announced its roadmap for 2025, focusing on accelerating its development and bringing it to mainnet. This year BOS will aim to finalize its foundational components, increasing integrations, and scaling the overall ecosystem.
⚡Why does it matter: The roadmap outlines the project’s goals for Bitcoin as it hopes to expand bitcoin’s functionality beyond just a pure store of value to enhance utility and enable access to the asset class with $2 trillion in liquidity.
BOS’ off-chain computations execute as transactions on the Bitcoin mainnet, bringing new utility features like secure multichain vaults, smart contracts, and programmable tokens to the ecosystem.
BOS’ 2025 roadmap outlines a phased approach to enhancing Bitcoin’s utility and competitiveness in the blockchain ecosystem.
In Q1, BOS plans to finalize BitSNARK zk-verifier and integrate it into Grail, a secure multichain vault that will launch on the Bitcoin mainnet. This initiative will also include BOS nodes, the $BOS token, and the introduction of a programmable token standard that establishes the foundational infrastructure for the network.
Later in the year, BOS will seek to expand its integrations starting with EVM and extending to other chains, such as UTXO systems and virtual machines based on Solana and Move. The network aims to further enhance interoperability and smart contract capabilities, with the launch of MerkleMesh and its programmable token framework in Q2.
By the end of the year, BOS aims to enhance Bitcoin with its scalable infrastructure, unlocking web3 opportunities. Future efforts will focus on ecosystem growth, innovation, and leveraging Bitcoin’s security for global blockchain applications.
⚡The big picture: The introduction of BOS to the Bitcoin mainnet has the potential to significantly expand the functionality and utility of the largest crypto asset.
The network is aiming to expand Bitcoin’s liquidity, transforming the blockchain into a home for decentralized applications and web3 innovation. BOS’ ability to enhance Bitcoin’s capabilities could further drive use and adoption for decentralized applications like DeFi and gaming in the digital economy.
This operating system could position Bitcoin to compete with other established blockchains, while leveraging its high security and massive liquidity. BOS’ focus on scalability and decentralization can also set it up for long-term growth by empowering the utility of bitcoin, as the leading cryptocurrency.
