Inside the network
🔺What we’re watching: Core, Avalanche’s built in-house crypto wallet, shared its users will no longer have to pay gas fees for most transactions on the C-Chain.
🔺Why it matters: This initiative looks to position Core as the go-to wallet application for Avalanche users by eliminating gas fees when the transaction is executed within its wallet.
Gas fees are costs users typically pay when transacting on a blockchain. By nature, it is a fundamental component of blockchain networks because the purpose is to compensate validators for processing and securing transactions on the network. In turn, it maintains decentralization and operational integrity. These costs can range from fractions of a cent to hundreds of dollars depending on the network.
Despite gas fees being essential for the blockchain’s functionality, it could deter users due to unpredictability and added cost. Depending on time and how clogged the network is, these costs might potentially be more than assets traded with itself.
“Tackling blockchain’s common challenges such as gas fees is precisely what will make the technology easier to adopt and more enjoyable to use across the board,” said Core Vice President Akash Gupta in the announcement post. “This development allows us to take a big step toward our broader goal to bring Avalanche to everyone.”
🔺The bigger picture: Core hopes to remove a pain point for its users by sponsoring gas fees. This looks to make the broader Avalanche ecosystem more competitive with other blockchain because it means its users won’t have to endure extra costs.
Specifically for DeFi users, slashing gas fees can reduce the financial weight of interacting with decentralized apps for staking or trading. This means, the amount users would save, while small at first glance, could accumulate quickly and save meaningful amounts in the long-term.
Gas fees often influence or inhibit where users spend their time onchain. High fees can push users toward other networks or tools that have lower operating costs. By alleviating this, Core’s integration aims to prove Avalanche’s positioning as a scalable, user-centric blockchain.
