🌊What happened: The Flow blockchain’s consumer web3 reach continues to grow through some of the biggest brands like Disney and NBA Top Shot, expanding its reach with more mainstream audiences.
🌊Why does it matter: Disney Pinnacle, the collectible platform licensed by Dapper Labs, broke records on the Flow blockchain. The pin drop features digital pins across Disney, Pixar and Star Wars with 25 pins sold for over $1,000 and 60 sold for over $500. Meanwhile, two pins, Star Wars™ Genesis Pin and Pixar Genesis Pin, sold for $30,150 and $25,000, respectively.
In three days, during its “Event VI” sale there were over $272,000 in sales across 5,645 pins sold, according to the data.
To date, about $1.15 million has been sold across seven events, highlighting the pin’s success not only on Flow, but as an avenue for fans to engage onchain (whether or not they know it.) As more projects see success on Flow, it helps position the blockchain as the go-to spot for big brands looking for fan and consumer engagement.
Meanwhile, NBA Top Shot integrated its NFTs into vending machines across cities in Japan. Since these collections are targeted to a more global, mainstream audience, fans can purchase collectibles in the form of an NFT.
Previously, it was only available through the NBA Top Shot app, Dapper wallet, or non-custodial marketplaces like OpenSea. So this opens up another wallet-less onboarding experience that meets collectors right where they are. Through the AIICO smart vending machine expansion, it opens the door to new adopters. The digital asset can be purchased for as low as $6.70 through mobile payments like Apple Pay or Google Pay, eliminating the need for any crypto knowledge.
In addition, users can scan a QR code to create a Flow wallet, simplifying the onboarding process even further. This embeds Flow’s technology into a number of vending machines across Japan ranging from Hokkaido to Okinawa. In Japan, there’s a huge appeal for trinkets and gadgets within vending machines, so this integration plays directly into the culture. has the potential to be a big hit. Capsule toys, which are bought mainly from vending machines in Japan, saw $1.7 billion sold in 2020. While that’s five years old, the market for this has only continued to grow in the billions.
While the technology isn’t at the forefront for either of these initiatives, it showcases the capabilities of the Flow ecosystem at a large scale. The blockchain is designed to support consumer-friendly applications across major entities like NBA Top Shot, Disney and UFC, to name a few. Dapper Labs, the team that launched Flow, created NBA Top Shot in 2020 and has seen extensive adoption since then with over $1.3 billion in total volume.
As a result, Flow will continue to be a major backbone in making blockchain-based collectibles more tangible and approachable in mainstream markets.
🌊The big picture: Most NFTs, or digital collectibles, are bought through online marketplaces or trading platforms. By adding NFTs to vending machines or licensing out well-known brands like Disney, it showcases a new path toward reaching the everyday consumer - and opens the potential for greater adoption for the asset.
In order to lower the barrier to entry in web3, it's important to be methodical with the approach. For Japan, vending machines are a big part of the culture, as one (or even dozens) can be found on every city block. Through familiar web2 tools like vending machines and fiat payment options, Flow can make NFTs more accessible to a wider audience.
If this strategy sees success, the broader web3 landscape can see a shift in how it acquires new users into the NFT ecosystem.
