Inside the network
🔺What we’re watching: The Avalanche Foundation launched the Avalanche Card in collaboration with Rain, a credit card issuer company that provides payment solutions for web3 ecosystems.
🔺Why it matters: The Avalanche Card is a physical and digital credit card that lets users transact with merchants, regardless if they’re in web2 or web3. Card holders can use their USDC, USDT, AVAX or Wrapped AVAX anywhere Visa is accepted.
Avalanche Foundation looks to eliminate the need for manual cryptocurrency conversions or multiple wallets to make it as easy to transact with as traditional credit or debit cards. In turn, this can enhance the utility of crypto for day-to-day transactions. By integrating with Visa, that can help legitimize the initiative and provide greater accessibility anywhere, given its global reach. This accessibility is particularly impactful in regions where traditional banking infrastructure may be limited or unreliable, like Southeast Asia, Africa or Latin America.
“With the Avalanche Card, your cryptocurrency is a tool for empowerment,” said John Wu, president of Ava Labs. “As digital assets garner mainstream adoption, leading with uses that are as familiar as swiping a credit card.”
Additionally, the release of the Avalanche Card can further the mass adoption of blockchain technology because it transforms cryptocurrency from just a speculative asset, into a tool for real-world transactions.
🔺The bigger picture: One barrier that the Avalanche Card aims to address is the difficulty to use digital assets as a form of payment for everyday expenses. By leveraging Visa’s payment network, this credit card can remove extra steps to perform crypto transactions, such as wallet compatibility, on-ramping or off-ramping.
Furthermore, the Avalanche Card can push its ecosystem forward by proving as a reliable network for fast transactions with high throughput and instant finality.
Avalanche has made strides in the past year to further progress the onchain financial system and act as a cross-road for decentralized and traditional finance alike. As adoption grows, the card could serve as a gateway to other blockchain-powered services and further strengthen Avalanche’s role in the future of digital finance.
