Inside The Blockchain

🔺What we’re watching: The Avalanche Foundation has launched the C-Chain round of Retro9000, a builder competition that rewards projects based on how much onchain activity they generate on Avalanche’s C-Chain.

🔺Why it matters: Unlike traditional grants that fund ideas upfront, Retro9000 distributes rewards after results are delivered.

For this round, projects must deploy verified smart contracts on Avalanche’s C-Chain and generate transaction activity that burns AVAX through network fees. The more AVAX are burned, the more points a project earns on the leaderboard.

Since competition rewards are based on transaction fees, teams are incentivized to build applications that attract real usage. Naturally, this can attract apps that see consistent usage such as trading protocols, payments solutions, games, or even subscription services.

🔺The bigger picture: Since Retro9000 is not a new program, we can review previous cohort participants and see how those projects performed under this framework.

For example, Blaze Stream, a creator-focused streaming Avalanche L1, was included in a prior cohort and received retroactive funding alongside other infrastructure builders. Blaze has become a popular network, attracting users with its system that distributes streaming fees back to creators. At its peak, in January, the network had 1,800 active addresses and recorded more than 5,400 daily transactions. Those numbers have since fallen mostly due to broader market conditions.

Retro9000 measures activity through AVAX burns in order to make sure participants are aligned with ecosystem integrity. Builders are encouraged to design products that users actively engage with, rather than relying solely on speculative interest or short-term incentives.

The program also features monthly snapshots in order to track activity, encouraging active development and network health.

Chart Of The Week
