Avalanche by the numbers

These metrics are based on a 7-day time frame, unless noted otherwise.

Inside the network

🔺What we’re watching: Ava Labs and Filecoin Foundation launched a native cross-chain data bridge to connect Avalanche's blockchain with Filecoin's storage network.

🔺Why it matters: This bridge looks to provide developers a way to store data permanently on Filecoin, while maintaining verification through Avalanche’s smart contracts. In turn, it would create a path that combines Avalanche's fast transaction processing with Filecoin's decentralized storage capabilities to create a more efficient system for Web3 applications.

In addition, this collaboration can help be a solution to existing blockchain storage challenges. In general, keeping all data onchain can be expensive and the usage of centralized solutions would compromise the decentralization aspect.

While it may be most applicable for web3 protocols, it could be beneficial for web2 businesses that are exploring the integration of blockchain technology.

Oftentimes, businesses that sell a product interact with sensitive information from customers. This bridge can offer a compliance-friendly way to handle sensitive information since the data is generated on Avalanche, sent to Filecoin for storage, and has payments handled natively on the Avalanche network.

Since developers can store data archives in a cost-efficient and high-performing way, it can showcase how enterprise applications across industries like finance and healthcare can benefit from blockchain integration.

🔺The bigger picture: Avalanche and Filecoin’s cross-chain bridge could be seen as the next step toward specialized blockchain architectures, something that can be compared to custom Avalanche layer-1s. This approach can create more enhanced features for environments where networks are able to handle specific functions.

In general, Avalanche has released network upgrades and provided resources for users and developers to launch application specific networks. This bridge is designed to be no different and enhance Avalanche's interoperability features to make it easier to build complex applications. It can act as a way where data remains accessible and verifiable long-term.
