Inside the network
🔺What we’re watching: Off The Grid, a blockchain-powered battle royale game built on Avalanche, officially launched on Steam.
🔺Why it matters: While Off The Grid has been available for “wishlist” on Steam since June, the game’s official downloadable release is now live. This expands its presence to PC, bringing exposure to more than half the total gaming market by revenue.
The release of Off The Grid on Steam marks a pivotal moment for both the game and the broader gaming ecosystem as it reached a peak of 12,648 concurrent players, according to SteamDB. Steam, developed by Valve, is the leading digital distribution platform for PC games, boasting a total user base of more than 40 million concurrent players, with 47 million daily active users, according to a recent study by Gadgets360.
With that said, in 2024, PC and console gaming made up for 51% of the total market with more than $95.1 billion in revenue, according to a report by Newzoo.
In addition, the PC gaming market is particularly attractive due to its diverse player base. It ranges from casual gamers to competitive esports enthusiasts, and has greater accessibility since PCs are more widely owned.
In 2021, Valve established restrictive rules and guidelines against blockchain-based applications for its distribution program. This meant games that issued or allowed the exchange of crypto or NFTs weren’t allowed on Steam. Despite this, games can still list themselves on the platform, but won’t actually be available to download.
However, Off The Grid’s official launch on Steam means the team tackled this from a different approach. “At no point will it be intrusive—it’s simply an optional layer,” Gunzilla Games Director of Web3, Theodore Agranat said in a December 2024 interview with CCN.
This integration elevates Off The Grid’s visibility to a new console and platform, while setting a precedent for future blockchain games seeking mainstream adoption.
🔺The bigger picture: In traditional games, buyable assets are typically controlled by developers and stored on centralized servers, limiting players’ ability to trade or retain them outside the game’s ecosystem. Off The Grid uses its Avalanche L1 to tokenize in-game items as NFTs, allowing players to own, trade, and monetize their assets securely.
While Steam’s general ban against blockchain-based games remains in effect, Off The Grid's official release creates a path for future games looking to reach mass adoption. If more web3 games approach it from a similar perspective, where blockchain is an added feature instead of a necessary one, it could onboard traditional gamers to web3 in an abstracted way.
