Agglayer Spotlight
🟪What happened: Polygon Labs’ CEO Marc Boiron shared the vision and roadmap for Agglayer during Polygon's Quarterly Webinar with Token Relations.
🟪Why does it matter: The Agglayer is on a mission to connect 100 chains by the end of the year, including all major EVM chains and non-EVM networks, Borion said. “It’s not just about new chains, it’s about [connecting] existing chains.”
The unifying ecosystem aims to solve blockchain fragmentation, which is a key barrier to web3 adoption. “If we look at what the current landscape is right, we have a lot of fragmentation across chains, not just in Ethereum, just across all of web3,” Boiron said.
By connecting all chains through a single ecosystem, users are abstracted away from having to navigate through different environments. These fragmented environments are often associated with complex swapping and bridging processes and leave normal users feeling overwhelmed.
Agglayer would like to “decrease fragmentation of assets themselves, which is kind of the role of the Unified Bridge,” Boiron said. The Unified Bridge would like to create a way for users to transact cross-chain, while feeling like a single chain.
"We need every single blockchain to be able to connect to the Agglayer," Boiron said. "Pessimistic proofs ensure safety, regardless of the properties of those chains." Agglayer pessimistic proofs are important for the ecosystem's security. This security system can create a “firewall” between chains while also verifying assets exist on the source chain before transfers occur. This prevents the vulnerabilities that have led to 2.87 billion in losses across cross-chain bridges.
For user experience, Agglayer wants to be “safe, cheap, fast and what that really means is we need sub two seconds going cross chain…It should feel that easy. It should feel that seamless.” Boiron mentioned.
🟪The big picture: This year, Agglayer fast interop is set to go live with multi-stack support for any chain and VM to connect. Currently, the siloed landscape is having users and devs experiencing the benefits, drawbacks and limitations of each network.
“The ability to increase distribution makes it more attractive for teams like Cosmos and Move to to bring assets to the Agglayer,” Boiron said. Agglayer has already planned to integrate with Solana via the Rome Protocol.
All in all, the goal is to “build a trustless internet.”
