Inside the network
🔺What we’re watching: Re expanded its reinsurance infrastructure platform with the introduction of two new institutional-grade yield products: reUSD and reUSDe.
🔺Why it matters: The reUSD product generates yield through investments in Treasury bills and delta-neutral ETH basis strategies, providing liquidity via Curve, while remaining isolated from insurance risk. This acts like a safe savings account that earns money by lending to the U.S. government through T-bills, which is a low-risk investment. Also, the product can use a balanced market strategy that makes money no matter if prices go up or down. This setup is designed to provide steady returns without taking on the risks of the insurance world, making sure a user’s money is easily accessible when they need it.
On the other end, reUSDe offers exposure to fully collateralized underwriting in U.S. insurance sectors such as homeowners, auto and workers’ compensation, with onchain transparency and built-in liquidity. In contrast, this product is more like multiple pools of investors who help back real-world insurance policies coming together to make a joint holding. Since a user’s money is fully backed, it means less risk, but since it's onchain, they can see exactly how it’s being used.
This development enhances Avalanche's appeal to institutional investors by bridging traditional reinsurance markets with blockchain technology. Through a compliant, KYC/AML-gated product, native DeFi protocols support and familiar avenues it can make the onboarding process easier to digest for a new crypto user.
Since Re provides transparent access to uncorrelated yields from real-world assets (RWAs), these new products address the demand for more sustainable, low-volatility returns in a traditionally volatile sector (crypto).
🔺The bigger picture: As more institutions enter the web3 space, Re's expansion showcases Avalanche's capabilities in the RWA sector, as a regulated financial instrument for onboarding new users. Over the past year, the RWA sector on Avalanche has grown more than 577% to $187 million, Token Relations Dashboard data shows.
This move can attract capital allocators seeking blockchain-enabled exposure to insurance economics, while enabling transparency solutions and DeFi capabilities. If Re’s reinsurance reUSD and reUSDe are adopted by institutions, it can prove that blockchain technology provides access to a previously inaccessible market. In turn, it positions Avalanche as a capable blockchain for these features.
