Ripple Rundown
➡️What happened: Ripple alongside Peersyst, Axelar and the XRPL community launched the XRP Ledger (XRPL) EVM Sidechain on mainnet, bringing Ethereum smart contract functionality to the XRP ecosystem.
➡️Why does it matter: This unlocks interoperability and programmability for XRPL, expanding it beyond payments. Developers can now deploy Solidity smart contracts and build decentralized apps that bridge XRPL and Ethereum.
The EVM Sidechain eliminates the traditional silos between EVM compatibility and accessing XRPL’s institution focused chain. The chain is set to have 1,000 TPS throughput and 3.4-second block times, bringing faster speeds and lower costs than Ethereum mainnet. This can provide further institutional-grade infrastructure for payments, DeFi and real-world asset tokenization on Ethereum.
Additionally, the sidechain also allows Ethereum to tap into the fourth-largest digital asset ecosystem by marketcap, the XRP token. The token will serve as the native gas token for the XRPL EVM Sidechain and can give developers access to the ecosystem's users and liquidity, with over 6 million XRPL wallet holders.
Similarly, the XRPL EVM Sidechain is a Cosmos-based chain which allows it to natively support Inter Blockchain Communication protocol (IBC). This has made it possible for the XRPL EVM Sidechain to be connected to Injective, Elys Network, Cosmos Hub and others, allowing for IBC asset transfers and cross-chain interoperability.
The application layer is already under development with DeFi protocols building apps with cross-chain functionality. For instance, Strobe is developing a money market protocol for DeFi lending and overcollateralized borrowing. While, Securd is focusing on secure passive income through collateralized leverage financing and Vertex is aiming to bring derivatives trading.
➡️The big picture: Ultimately, the XRPL EVM Sidechain has the ability to connect XRP and XRPL to the largest DeFi ecosystem, Ethereum, standing at $62.3 billion in TVL.
Through interoperability solutions, applications deployed on the sidechain can tap into the users and liquidity from various ecosystems, including Ethereum layer 2’s. Axelar serves as the primary cross-chain connectivity provider. Similarly, Wormhole has also partnered with the sidechain to expand its interoperability capabilities. This connects XRPL EVM to over 200 applications across more than 35 blockchain ecosystems.
This can go on to represent an evolution for XRP from a payment-focused token to a comprehensive DeFi platform, potentially bridging institutional adoption with retail DeFi innovation.
The launch aligns with the broader industry shift toward blockchain interoperability, where success increasingly depends on connecting chains rather than competing in isolation, overall leading to a more unified and accessible web3 ecosystem.
