Sei Showcase

Highlighting the biggest developments on Sei

💨 What’s happening: Sei Labs’ SIP-3 upgrade, which will transition the network to an Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) blockchain, is going to be rolled out over the next few months. But what does that look like for users, developers and infrastructure providers?

The company is easing that transition with a phased roll out, starting with upcoming updates, v6.3 and v6.4, that will phase in EVM compatibility and phase out transfers of certain kinds of assets into the Sei network.

💨 Why it matters: Following the v6.3 update, staking will be handled entirely through the EVM system used by applications so that users and service providers can easily use a wide array of tools to track balances and manage funds.

Meanwhile, v6.4 will stop Cosmos-specific tokens such as Atom and USDC.n from being transferred into the network as part of a move to wind down older transaction paths. Later updates will extend this process and replace Sei’s built-in price data system with external providers.

Taken together, these changes reduce the moving parts in the network, which would lead to lower maintenance requirements, and eventually make Sei easier to operate and improve over time.

💨 The bigger picture: These updates directly lead up to Sei’s Giga upgrade,  which would enable the network to support much higher transaction volumes than current EVM-based blockchains. To reach that goal, the network needs a simpler and more focused design.

The SIP-3 proposal supports this by narrowing Sei’s architecture to one main system. While these updates will not make the network faster by themselves, they remove sources of complexity that could slow future upgrades. This makes it easier for Sei to focus on performance improvements as Giga rolls out.
