Spotlight on Optimism’s Superchain

🔴What’s happening: Sony Block Solutions Labs announced the development of Soneium, a layer-2 blockchain (L2) built using the OP Stack, and will join the Superchain ecosystem.

🔴Why it matters: The launch of Soneium is part of Sony’s venture into the world of blockchain technology and marks the company’s next initiative into web3.

Sony has been a key player in the development of some of the most influential electronic goods we have seen to date, such as CDs, the Walkman, and the PlayStation. Its entry into the blockchain space brings the credibility of a household brand with global reach and vast resources into the world of blockchain technology.

Sony’s established presence across multiple sectors means they can seamlessly integrate blockchain technology into products and services that people already know and trust.

Alongside a partnership with Startale, a web3 infrastructure development company, Sony plans to utilize its resources and experience in gaming, entertainment, and technology to drive greater web3 adoption by making decentralized applications more accessible to everyday consumers.

“Sony Group has strong distribution channels in multiple industries and existing users in our daily lives,” Sota Watanabe, director of Sony Block Solutions Labs, said. “Through Soneium, we will make something people want and go mainstream beyond web3.”

🔴What it means for the broader ecosystem: As more Fortune 500 companies explore the use of blockchain technology, Sony’s foray into the web3 space could make web3 more accessible and user friendly.

Additionally, Soneium will join the Superchain and will help support public goods by contributing 15% of sequencer fees to the Optimism Collective. This will benefit the overall Superchain ecosystem alongside other L2s like Base and Zora.
