Ripple Rundown
➡️What happened: The XRP Ledger is expanding its institutional DeFi capabilities with the launch of new features like Multi-Purpose Token and enhanced compliance features like Permissioned DEX and Domains as well as credentials.
➡️Why does it matter: XRPL looks to bridge traditional finance and blockchain technology by providing infrastructure that is compliance focused, while still building DeFi mechanisms that are intended to prioritize speed, efficiency and security.
The platform's AMM, which went live on mainnet last year, integrates with the XRPL DEX in an attempt to reduce the risk of impermanent loss. XRPL has made it a priority to create a regulatory friendly infrastructure with features like the AMM clawback. This means token issuers can get back their assets from the AMM in the case of suspicious activity or for compliance reasons. In turn, issuers can have more control over their tokens in liquidity pools when it comes to preventing fraud or maintaining regulatory compliance.
Furthermore, XRPL’s decentralized identity system can also help to solve problems for regulated companies by allowing identity verification without exposing sensitive data. This means banks and financial institutions would be able to meet compliance requirements while still keeping decentralization and privacy a priority.
Also, the introduction of protocol native price oracles and the upcoming Multi-Purpose Token (MPT) standard looks to position XRPL as an ecosystem for the tokenization of real-world assets (RWA). By bringing price data onchain for interest rates, market prices, funding rates and more, the ecosystem can be the home to tokenized RWAs with detailed data.
The MPT also gives more flexibility, while issuing tokenized assets as the token itself is able to hold metadata that can be key information for the assets price and value. An example of this would be identical assets with slight differences that can impact its value, like expiry date for a bond or unit number for an apartment.
The native lending protocols under development aim to enable both collateralized and uncollateralized lending directly onchain, potentially creating more efficient lending markets for institutional participants.
➡️The big picture: XRPL's institutional focus could accelerate the integration of blockchain technology into traditional finance by providing practical infrastructure with regulatory compliance rather than attempting to replace existing systems.
This comes after the collaboration with Ondo Finance to launch the US tokenized treasury (OUSG) on XRPL, backed by major institutions like BlackRock’s BUIDL fund. These events mark milestones for the network’s growth as the network is experiencing broad adoption of its technology alongside over 2.8 billion transactions processed onchain.
The network’s history could offer institutions increased confidence with tested systems rather than new and unproven platforms. The combination of these features can make it practical for traditional finance to work with blockchain technology, while still meeting regulatory requirements.
